Road Legal Quad Bike Guide

Many people that I know that love riding quad bikes, would also like to get their kids involved. The problem is, they’re not sure what size of quad bike to get. Get one too small and they’ll outgrow it too quickly. Get one to big and they might hurt themselves.

A 110cc quad bike is a good middle point. Its a little larger than some of the “kid” quad bikes available, but not so powerful so that they’re dangerous. A 110cc quad bike will max out at 35mph – 45mph/55kph – 70kph depending on the weight of the rider. An average 12 year old would top out around 40mph/65kph.

Is that too fast for a 12 year old? Maybe. You’ll have to use your judgment on that. I think a 110cc quad bike is a great beginner quad. It will also last them for the next several years. In fact, I wouldn’t recommend anything more powerful until they’re at least 16.

Many parents may scoff at giving a pre-teen a 110cc quad bike. If something that powerful makes you uncomfortable, you can get 50cc quads. These usually max out around 30kph and many have settings that will reduce the power even further.

The problem with a 50cc quad is that most kids will quickly outgrow these. I would rather buy a more powerful quad that will last for years.

What About Road Legal Quads?

While you can make a 110cc quad bike road legal, why would you? Even with a road legal quad, you have to have a proper license to drive on the street. Save your money and buy a proper road legal quad bike once the driver is old enough to get a license.

110cc quads are tons of fun for all ages. If you have a child that is interested in riding ATVs, I would highly recommend obliging their interest. Quad bikes are a great way to teach responsibility and the spend time together as a family.

Before you buy, talk to some local dealers and get a feel for the quad that would work best for the area that you will be driving it in. Pick out a few then get online and read reviews of the quads. Try to find people that have owned the model for several years so that you can pick a quad bike that will last until your child outgrows it.

Usually compared to a motorcycle, a road legal quad bike definitely has more exciting and powerful features than that of a conventional motorbike. They may be similar to the way they are driven, but the stability and functionality offered by quad bikes are truly worth recognizing.
